After 3 and a half years of nothing but working & saving money we're finally heading off on our travels! Despite the years I had to prepare and think about what to take we only eventually finished packing at 11am before heading to the airport at 11.30am, phew. Once we got on the bus to the airport we both started getting a peedie bit excited. First we flew to Heathrow and had a couple of hours until our 8 hour flight to Delhi. We managed to get some cash cards from the Travelex counter in Terminal 5 after leaving it too late to get them anywhere else.

We flew to Delhi with BA and had a really good flight. We got our dinner & watched the Hangover 2 then attempted to sleep for a few hours. They woke us up about half 4 for breakfast before landing at about 6am. Getting through Delhi airport was problem free too. Once we got out of the airport we decided getting a taxi to the hotel would be the easiest option so went to look for the taxi rank. After a bit of wandering about trying to decide whether to get a real taxi or a tuk tuk a man approached us saying he would take us. He proceeded to walk for about 10 minutes into the airport multi story car park where we had to wait 5 minutes for his taxi to pull up, bad first choice! It turned out that he was the owner of the taxi company, he sat in the passenger seat and got dropped off about a mile down the road. We then had a hairy 30 minute drive to the hotel in the crazy Indian traffic. I've never heard so many horns honking or so many cars driving in the middle of the road. Apparently the lines on the road mean nothing in India. It was a pretty good way to wake us up after the long flight!

We eventually got to the street where our hotel was supposed to be and really hoped he had the wrong place. It was a dingy alley with what looked like a couple of dead dogs lying in the middle of the street, lots of rubbish and no people! It turns out our hotel was there but thankfully it was much nicer inside. After checking in we attempted a walk around the area to get our bearings but within 5 seconds of leaving the hotel we were accosted by 3 or 4 very persistent tuk tuk drivers. That put us off straight away so we literally walked round the block and straight back to the safety of our hotel!

We met our tour leader & the rest of the group that night and felt reassured that starting out trip with a tour was a good choice! We went out for our first real Indian meal that night and were very happy with it. Then an early night before a day of site seeing the following day...
